Blood Bowl Hobgoblin

Image
There were never hobgoblins in 2 nd edition Blood Bowl so you would have to use something else if you wanted to use the chaos dwarfs from thar era. I went with 1 st  edition orcs back when I did my chaos dwarfs , but I was never satisfied with the faces. So I tried to sculpt my own face. Hobgoblin I was aiming for a more oriental look in line with the Citadel AD&D hobgoblins . I don't know whether I'll be doing more, but it was a fun little project.

Glart Smashrip

Image
I've decided to play underworld denizens in an upcoming one day Blood Bowl tournament. Only problem is that I don't have a painted team. I have my skaven , but I don't have enough goblins  and I also want to use a the star players Glart Smashrip and Skitter Stab-Stab. Who can say no to an obese Strength 4 monster with claw and a backstabbing gutter runner? Glart Smashrip Forgeworld have released a version of  Glart Smashrip , but it doesn't really fit with the oldschool miniatures that I collect so I decided to sculpt my own version. The result can be seen here. I used the hands and feet from a  lineman and the head from a kicker  since those are the hardest parts to sculpt. I don't have time to paint all the needed miniatures before the tournament so I will have to use what I have and the team will look somewhat eclectic. As long as there are no unpainted miniatures though I'm happy. I wanted to stay true to the original artwork, but I...

Dark Elf Blood Bowl Blitzer 2

Image
In 2015 my son was born. 2015 was also the last time I updated this blog. There has not been much painting since then, but I'm starting to feel the urge to produce something again. Until that happens here is a blitzer I never got around to post back then. Dark Elf Blitzer Dark Elf Blitzer

Blood Bowl Witch Elf

Image
Witch elves are what makes dark elf teams so cool. They are expensive to hire and break easily, but the amount of damage they can do to your opponent's team more than makes up for this. Witch Elf From a modelling point of view they are really interesting too. I've always fancied Jes Goodwin's Eldar harlequins  and I wanted my witch elves to look something like that. Witch Elf For a very long time I was struggling to find a combination of parts that I was satisfied with and I decided to scratch my first attempts . In the end I decided to use a Marauder witch elf combined with the legs of a female eldar harlequin. Since the face of the Marauder witch wasn't exactly up to Jes Goodwin standards I also used the face mask of the harlequin. Witch Elf The result is a witch elf in an attacking position which suits this kind of player well, I think.

Dark Elf Blood Bowl Blitzer

Image
Latest addition to the team is a blitzer. I wanted him to resemble the old starplayer Tuern Redvenom  so I used his face mask, copied his thigh guards and combined them with the torso of one of the original blitzers. Dark Elf Blitzer I used this technique to create the thigh guards and it worked really well. The head and legs were donated by old wood elf wardancers . Dark Elf Blitzer I think he looks both meaner and more dynamic than the original blitzer models  which is the way I like my dark elves. Next up is a witch elf I have been working on for some time now.

Dark Elf Blood Bowl Assassin

Image
Next player up for my dark elf team is an assassin. The fact that this player can run around stabbing his opponents in the back without risking getting caught by the referee is enough to include one, but overall I don't find this player very useful. Dark Elf Assassin The assassin does provide for an interesting modelling project though and I had this idea in my head that I just had to try out. I ended up using the body of an  elf wardancer called Eidyn  because of the very cool fighting claw he has strapped to his right arm. The head was taken from an eldar scout  wearing a scarf. Dark Elf Assassin I green stuffed the skull on the shoulder pad as well as the towel hanging from his waist. I chose to paint the base ring green. Green is normally reserved for blockers , but since dark elves don't have any I figured that it would work as well as any other color.

Dark Elf Blood Bowl Players

I've finally managed to finish a couple of the dark elves that I started working on last year. My plan is to do a complete "Jes Goodwin" dark elf team  and this is of course just the start. Dark Elf Runner I ended up painting the runner's mohawk in two tones to make him stand out on the board. After all he is the star of the team, sort of. The lineman has had his head replaced with one of an eldar scout . The facial mask makes him look particularly sinister, I think. Dark Elf Lineman The base rings were done using this technique .

Blood Bowl Dwarf Coach

Image
I painted up this dwarf coach many years ago. Originally I had ordered a dwarf siege gun with crew from Mail Order, but since the trollz sent me a miscast  gunner (with no flame) I decided to do something completely different with him and that's how he ended up as a Blood Bowl coach. Dwarf Coach At the time I played one of the Madden NFL games and I stole this running play from one of the playbooks in the game. The blackboard itself is made from cardboard and matchsticks.

Blood Bowl Goblins

Image
I'm currently coaching a team of orcs in a local league  which has inspired me to revisit my Blitzburgh Squealers orc team that I painted for the World Cup in Nottingham in 2007. Since I only painted up 12 players back then I quickly ran out of miniatures as the games went by in the league. Goblin I don't like to field unpainted miniatures and I really wanted to add some goblins to the squad so I painted up two of the old Citadel Miniatures Kev Adams goblins  from the 2 nd edition Blood Bowl range of miniatures. I really like these miniatures and they were a real joy to paint. So much that I'm actually considering painting up a full team at some point. Goblin The theme of the team is a mix of two worlds. They are of course heavily inspired by the original Orcland Raiders team , but as I wanted to add a helmet stripe I chose to paint the helmets to represent the Pittsburgh Steelers . (Not visible on these goblins). I still need to paint up the second thr...

Converting Blood Bowl Dark Elves

Image
I've always loved dark elves. I've played them in local leagues, tournaments and on fumbbl  and I've always preferred them to their lawful wood elf and high elf cousins. For some reason I've never painted a team of these evil elves though I've owned the miniatures for ages and it was only recently that I found out why. More on that later. It's not that I didn't try in the past. In the early days of Blood Bowl 3 rd edition I ran a dark elf squad named the Purple Reign. I painted a blitzer and that was it. I enjoyed playing the team, but I didn't enjoy painting the miniatures. Dark Elf Blitzer Years later I tried again. This time I wanted to recreate the 2 nd edition team the Naggaroth Nightwings . Again I failed. Naggaroth Nightwings Blitzer The years passed and I forgot all about my beloved dark elves, but then the dark elf roster was changed as it was too similar to the high elf roster. One of the changes was the introduction of runn...

Blood Bowl Base Rings

Image
Every Blood Bowl player will at some point have tried to play a match where it was hard to tell your opponent's miniatures apart. It can be very frustrating if there is no easy way to tell whether you are blocking a black orc or a goblin. "My blitzers are the ones with slightly more spikes than the others..."  Really? Also, it's rather time consuming when you constantly have to ask your opponent what his playing pieces represent. Orc Blitzer That's why I love base rings! Base rings were introduced in the 2 nd edition of Blood Bowl (I think) and by using them you can make your players' positions immediate to your opponent. The original position colors were as follows: Blitzer: Red Blocker: Green Thrower: White Catcher: Yellow Lineman: Grey I always follow these guidelines when I paint my base rings, but the color is not really important as long as you can tell the miniatures apart. I often get asked how I paint the base rings on m...

Undead Tournament Roster Finished

Image
It's been a couple of months since the Danish Open 2014 took place. The weather was very sunny for the whole weekend and as such perfect for sitting indoors and playing boardgames. I ended up with a 3-1-2 record which was okay given the circumstances. My first match was against an orc team which totally destroyed my team giving me no chance at all and leaving me with a 0-2 loss in my opening match. Next match was against wood elves. It ended with a 2-2 draw which was a little bit disappointing. From that point it went a lot better though and the next three matches against orcs, norse and nurgle teams all ended with wins for the undead. I ended up losing my last match to a very well coached chaos pact team, but it could have gone both ways really. Overall it was a very fun weekend and a chance to touch base  with old friends. Undead Mummy I managed to finish the 12 man roster before the event and the latest batch includes the second mummy, the last two ghouls and...

Undead Reinforcements

Image
Danish Open 2014 is getting closer and I'm determined to play my undead team at the tournament so I have been painting a lot lately. Undead Halfling Zombie The hafling zombie is a slightly modified Blood Bowl halfling. I know that technically you can't raise halflings, but the race makes no difference to the game since all zombies have the same stats. Undead Elf Zombie The unlucky elf is a converted Blood Bowl elf lineman with his legs removed. I used the legs from an old ghoul/zombie instead. Undead Zombie The human zombie wasn't modified in any way. Undead Ghoul The ghouls are both from the range of AD&D miniatures that Citadel produced for a short while. They have both received shoulder pads sculpted in Green Stuff. Undead Ghoul Right now I'm working on a skaven zombie and another ghoul and hopefully they will all be ready in time for the tournament. Maybe I'll see you there?
